Currently, several major land-based casino operators are seeking to obtain one of three licenses in southern New York State, where the famous city of the same name is located.
Among them, for example, is the Las Vegas Sands group, which is working on a project that could be built to replace the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island.
This doesn’t seem to please the board of trustees of the nearby village of Garden City.
A symbolic vote by the Garden City board of directors
Just a few days ago, the Garden City Board of Trustees held a purely symbolic vote on the Las Vegas Sands hotel-casino project in Nassau County. It was unanimously rejected.
It should be noted that this village is located less than a kilometer from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum site, on which the gaming complex could be built. With this vote, the board of trustees wants to publicly express its strong opposition to the project. It fears that it will have a negative impact on the quality of life and character of the surrounding communities.
Moreover, this sentiment seems to be shared by the local population. Elected officials have indicated that they have heard many negative comments about this hypothetical hotel-casino from their constituents. They particularly fear an increase in insecurity.
Accordingly, the Garden City Board of Trustees strongly encourages Nassau County to vote against this project.

Hofstra University President’s Opposition
This isn’t the only opposition expressed against the Las Vegas Sands casino-hotel project on Long Island. Indeed, President Susan Poser of the region’s largest private university (Hofstra University), for example, recently stated that such a gambling establishment has no place near a place of higher education.
However, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum directly adjoins the university, which is home to more than 10,000 students. To explain her opposition, she cited, among other things, a 2021 study showing that the presence of a casino near a campus can increase the rate of problem gambling in the area.
Some information about the Las Vegas Sands project
As a reminder, it was on Thursday, January 12th, that the Las Vegas Sands group formalized its hotel-casino project in Nassau County. For the time being, this American operator does not currently operate a similar complex in the United States. Indeed, all of its gaming establishments are located in Macau and Singapore.
That’s why he wants to spend up to $5 billion to build a hotel-casino in place of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
It is expected to feature 4- and 5-star hotel rooms and suites, a world-class performance hall, and outdoor community spaces. In addition to a spa, swimming pool, fitness club, bars, and restaurants, among other amenities, it would also feature a large casino with slot machines and traditional gaming tables.
