Ever since Japan decided to open a few gambling establishments on its soil, major casino groups have been eyeing it up. It must be said that the economic stakes are colossal, amounting to several billion dollars each year.
According to experts, Japan’s few casinos are expected to generate far more revenue than all of Las Vegas and could take second place in the ranking of the world’s gambling capitals. Indeed, Macau’s casinos are expected to continue to hold the top spot, closely followed by those in Japan. Competition is expected to be fierce in the gaming world, and Asian casinos have a better share of revenue than those in the United States or Europe.
Major casino groups such as Wynn Resorts, Las Vegas Sands, MGM Resorts, Galaxy Entertainment, Genting Group and even Société des Bains de Mer de Monaco are all showing interest in this mega project. Each is making their move as best they can and announcing their preferred city. The latest is Wynn Resorts, which is showing interest in the Kanto region…where Tokyo is located .
Wynn Resorts: Kanto, not Tokyo
A change of strategy for the Wynn Resorts group , which had set itself the goal of opening a casino in Osaka. For many months, Wynn Resorts representatives met with local officials, and everything went perfectly.
Except that the American group has decided to set its sights on the Kanto region. Wynn Resorts plans to open a casino in Tokyo, which is the capital of six prefectures: Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Tochigi. The American group therefore wants to build a casino in the Kanto region without actually mentioning Tokyo.

Strong competition for Tokyo
The group founded by Steve Wynn (he was ousted from management following sexual abuse concerns, editor’s note) has focused on Osaka, Yokohama, and Tokyo. But Wynn Resorts isn’t the only one looking to open a casino in Tokyo.
Sheldon Adelson’s group is in the game. Indeed, although Las Vegas Sands is putting all its energy into opening a gaming establishment in Yokohama, it is holding a card for Tokyo. The American tycoons haven’t revealed all their cards to secure the Holy Grail and a gaming license in Japan.
We’ll have to wait until the first half of 2020 to find out who will be the lucky winners. In the meantime, everyone is developing their own strategies and contacts to try to be among the future licensees. Watch this space.
